Solutions to Fix Outlook Error 0x800CCC92

Below are the solutions that you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the error.

Solution 1: Check POP Email Account Credentials

It’s possible that you may be entering wrong or outdated password (the password has expired). One of the most basic solutions is to properly validate and verify the email login credentials. To check the credentials,

  1. Open Outlook and go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
  2. Click the Email tab, choose your POP email account (with which you are having trouble), and click Change.
  3. Then, check your username and password. Make sure they are entered correctly. In case you’ve recently changed the password on any of the devices, update it here. If not sure, reset the password or contact the administrator to help you generate a new password.

Solution 2: Reconfigure POP and SMTP Server Settings

Incorrect server settings can also prevent Outlook users from authenticating with the POP mail server and lead to 0x800CCC92 error. Follow these steps to check and reconfigure the POP email account settings.

  1. In Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
  2. Select your email account and click Change.
  3. Make sure that the Incoming mail server (POP3) and Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings are correct and match those provided by your administrator or email service provider.
    • For example, common settings are:
      • Incoming server (POP3): pop.mailprovider.com
      • Outgoing server (SMTP): smtp.mailprovider.com
      • Ensure that SSL encryption is enabled for both incoming and outgoing connections (if required by your mail provider).
  4. Check the Port numbers:
  1. For POP3: Port 995 with SSL encryption.
  2. For SMTP: Port 465 or 587 with SSL encryption.
  3. After ensuring everything, click Next and test the new settings.

If the settings are correct, Outlook should now connect to the mail server successfully.

Solution 3: Disable Antivirus and Firewall Temporarily

Antivirus and other security apps, such as firewall, are known to cause conflict and issues with Outlook that could lead to connectivity issues, leading to the error 0x800CCC92. In such cases, you can temporarily disable these security apps to diagnose the issue. Here’s how:

  1. Open your antivirus or firewall program.
  2. Find the option to disable real-time protection and the firewall temporarily.
  3. Once disabled, open Outlook and click on the Update Folders option under the Send/Receive tab.
  4. If synchronization or folder update finishes, the error is resolved. Then, add Outlook and your mail server details to the antivirus and firewall’s exclusion list.
  5. Once this is done, you can re-enable the protection by turning on the firewall and real-time protection.

Solution 4: Remove POP Email Account from One or More Other Devices

If there’s a limit set by the administrator on the number of devices you can login simultaneously, it can lead to authentication failure or lead to the 0x800CCC92 error. The solution is to log out from other devices where you have signed in using the same POP email account. Then, try again on your system where you currently want to log in.

Solution 5: Update Outlook

Outdated Outlook may have some bug or missing feature that might be causing authentication failure or connectivity issues. Thus, you can check and update the Outlook by following these steps:

  • Open Outlook and go to File > Office Account > Update Options.
  • From the available options, choose Update Now.

  • Open the Control Panel, go to User Accounts, and click Mail.
