Now the latest and upcoming chipsets are prepared based on ARM Cortex A72 to improve the performance. Here are some CPUs that we will compare in this article.
- Snapdragon 650
- Snapdragon 652
- Kirin 950
- Helio X20
Snapdragon 650 (MSM8956)
Snapdragon 650 is a hexacore CPU (2 cores X ARM Cortex A72 + 4 cores X ARM Cortex A53) based on 28nm HPm technology. It supports LPDDR3 RAM 933MHz dual-channel. Latest Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 3 Pro has been launched with this CPU. However, Geekbench seems to have some issue showing the correct Snapdragon part number on its test. Redmi Note 3 Pro has always appeared on Geekbench with MSM8952, that is Snapdragon 617. Snapdragon 650 Geekbench 3 single-core benchmark score is 1571, and multi-core Score is 3722.
Snapdragon 652 (MSM8976)
Snapdragon 652 is an octa-core CPU (4 cores X ARM Cortex A72 + 4 cores X ARM Cortex A53) based on 28nm HPm technology, and it also supports LPDDR3 RAM 933MHz dual-channel.
Snapdragon 652 is basically known as upgraded version of Snapdragon 650 as four cores are based on ARM Cortex A72. However, we have checked the Samsung Galaxy A9 2016 model Geekbench 3 score, and the best single-core score it was able to make is 1467, and 4987 in multi-core performance. So the score part is confusing because Snapdragon 650 still leads in single-core performance.
Kirin 950
Huawei introduced Kirin 950 with the latest Huawei Mate 8 Smartphone. Kirin 950 CPU is an octa-core processor (4 cores X ARM Cortex A72 + 4 cores X ARM Cortex A53) based on 16nm FinFET tech. Kirin 950 supports LPDDR3/LPDDR4 RAM. However, Huawei Mate 8 is based on LPDDR4 RAM 1600 MHz.
In terms of Benchmarking, Kirin 950 scored 1877 in single-core performance and 5633 in multi-core performance. So it is certainly a better chip compared to Snapdragon 650 and 652, but no one would do a comparison in this way. Kirin 950 would always go against Snapdragon 820 or Mediatek Helio X20 or Exynos 8890 or Apple A9.
Mediatek Helio X20 (MT6797)
Mediatek has finally made something that is ready to go against high-end chipsets. It is the world’s first deca-core CPU (2 cores X Cortex A72 + 4 cores X Cortex A53 + 4 cores X Cortex A53). Helio X20 turned out to be a monster on Geekbench 3 benchmark test scoring 6969 in multi-core performance, and 2193 in single-core performance. It will come at the top in the multi-core score, but in single-core, it would probably hold the 5th position after Apple A9X, Apple A9, Snapdragon 820 and Exynos 8890.
Being a high-end chip, it has a dark side as Mediatek failed to use LPDDR4 RAM support. It still supports LPDDR3 RAM 933MH. Doogee F7 could be the first smartphone to feature Helio X20 Chipset.
