Skype for TV was announce in 2010, and since that time users have been receiving all Skype updates. Many Smart TVs were launched with preinstalled Skype app, even LG and Samsung did. However, Microsoft has decided to stop Skype support for TVs. Skype for TV will not receive any update or support after June 1, 2016.
If you want to know the reason behind this, Skype mentioned that majority of Skype users use their Mobile Devices to use Skype, and they want to improve users experience making Skype service even better for the devices that are used the most to access Skype.
Over the years, users have changed the way they use Skype, with the majority accessing it from a mobile device – including when in the living room. We want to make sure we prioritize delivering the best possible experience to the platforms our users are asking for, which is why we’ve decided to focus our efforts in other areas while supporting key functionality on Skype for TV for as long as possible.
Skype has not mentioned anything about the complete removal of Skype app for TV, but they have just confirmed that the update/support will not be provided. So users will still be able to use Skype as long as their TV Manufacturers choose to keep it.
Samsung has already sent Skype Removal notification to its Smart TV users. Skype App will be removed on from 2 for Samsung Smart TVs.
Smartphones and tablets with large display have changed many things. Skype for PCs used to be very popular, but now it is popular among mobile users. Mobile devices are more private, and it helps users to have private conversation whenever and wherever they want. Skype for computer is still available, and we don’t think they will remove it anyway.
If you used to use Skype for TV, it’s better to get the habit of using on Mobile Devices or computer, because after June 1, your TV manufacturer may remove anytime.
